Forgetting across a hierarchy of episodic representations

نویسندگان

چکیده

Rich episodic experiences are represented in a hierarchical manner across diverse network of brain regions, and as such, the way which episodes forgotten is likely to be similarly diverse. Using novel experimental approaches statistical modelling, recent research has suggested that item-based representations, such ones related colour shape an object, fragment over time, whereas higher-order event-based representations may more ‘holistic’ uniform manner. We propose framework reconciles these findings, where complex manner, from individual items, small-scale events, large-scale narratives. Each level hierarchy distinct perirhinal cortex, posterior hippocampus, anterior hippocampus ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Critically, forgetting underpinned by different mechanisms at each hierarchy, leading patterns behaviour.

Retrieval-induced forgetting in episodic memory.

Participants learned the locations of 12 stimuli that were uniquely colored but could be grouped by shape (4 circles, 4 triangles, 4 crosses). Following the study, a retrieval-practice phase required participants to recall the colors of a subset of the stimuli (i.e., 2 circles, 2 triangles) using shape and location as cues. In a final test, participants recalled the colors of all 12 stimuli. Co...

Semantic generation can cause episodic forgetting.

The repeated retrieval of a subset of previously learned items can cause forgetting of the nonretrieved items. The study reported here investigated whether retrieval-induced forgetting generalizes to a situation in which the retrieved and nonretrieved items are not part of the same experiential episode and task. Subjects learned an item list that they had to recall later in the experiment. In a...

A Hierarchy of Qualitative Representations for Space

Research in Qualitative Reasoning builds and uses discrete symbolic models of the continuous world. Inference methods such as qualitative simulation are grounded in the theory of ordinary differential equā tious. We argue here that cognitive mapping -building and using symbolic models of the large-scale spatial environment -is a highly appropriate domain for qualitative reasoning research. We d...

Hierarchy in Knowledge Representations

This paper discusses a number of problems faced in communicating expertise and common sense to a computer, and the approaches taken by several current knowledge representation languages towards solving these problems. The main topic discussed is hierarchy. The importance of hierarchy is almost universally recognized. Hierarchy forms the backbone of many existing representation languages. We dis...
